This introductory course is designed to broaden educational interpreters' understanding and knowledge of deaf cultural perspectives of highlighted dimensions of K-12 educational interpreting. This added dimension will strengthen interpreters' ability to serve a broad range of deaf and hard-of-hearing students with varied communication needs. Selected topics include: communication modalities, interpreter demeanor, interpreter-student dynamics: helping vs advocating, interpreters' positioning in the classroom.Course Objectives:
1) To introduce and sensitize interpreters to communication modalities, used by deaf and hard-of hearing students in a mainstream setting.
2) To introduce interpreters to cultural features of demeanor, including attire and behaviors in interpreting in a mainstream setting.
3) To introduce interpreters to dynamics of interaction and relationships in the mainstream setting.
4) To enhance interpreters awareness and understanding of helping and advocating deaf and hard of hearing students.
5) To sensitize interpreters to various positioning in different settings of interpreting.
