Sensitive Language/Content: Considerations, Implications, and Techniques for Interpreters

Sensitive Language/Content: Considerations, Implications, and Techniques for Interpreters

Product Information

- 9 hours/0.9 CEUs.

Please note:

  • This workshop contains content that may be considered offensive to individuals in terms of sexism, racism, identification, etc.
  • This workshop is NOT intended to be offensive to individuals; the main intent is to provide clear examples of specific content that is commonly experienced in interpreting and/or D/deaf related situations and is developed with the intent to provide knowledge and exposure to these sensitive language issues to better prepare interpreters to manage their interpretations in order to interpret more effectively.
Interpreters are frequently presented with interpreting highly sensitive content such as profanity or highly charged cultural information that is difficult to interpret cross culturally. This may present challenges due to a lack of exposure (e.g., understanding of the vocabulary item) as well as limited experience interpreting these types of texts into English accurately.

This presentation will focus on sensitive ASL texts and developing equivalency with respect to gender, cultural norms, etc.

This presentation will apply the strategies for developing English equivalent interpretations for a number of videotaped texts in a variety of settings including medical, mental health, legal, and employment.

This is one you don't want to miss!
